Buying Guide
A golf simulator can be a huge investment. Because of this, it’s important to consider all the factors that will affect your experience and match it with what your goals are.
Here are the most important factors you need to consider when figuring out what golf simulator will best meet your needs:
1. Size
Size is a very important factor in golf simulators.
Generally speaking, the more expensive the simulator, the larger the footprint the studio will take up. A full screen, enclosure and turf will likely require the most space, while a practice net will require less space.
In any case, you need enough space for the simulator setup and to swing your longest club (driver) unimpeded.
You need to measure the width, length and height of your space and compare it to the minimum space requirements of every golf simulator you look at. If you’re using a projector, also consider how far away you’ll be mounting it from the screen to produce the image you want, and factor that into the depth.
Practically all full golf simulator setups will require a bare minimum of eight feet of ceiling height, but you should strive for at least nine feet.
Width allowance is usually a minimum of ten feet, and depth allowance is usually a minimum of twelve feet, although launch monitors like the Mevo Gen2 and Full Swing KIT need more depth. Whether you want to use your simulator outdoors or indoors, your space should be able to easily accommodate this.
2. Portability
Another thing to consider is ease of transport. In general, more expensive simulators are less portable, although this certainly isn’t a hard and fast rule.
The first matter is the launch monitor or tracking system. Ceiling-mounted launch monitors like the ProTee VX, QED or EYE XO are not portable, nor are systems that run sensors underneath the floor.
On the other hand, freestanding units like the Launch Pro Circle B, EYE MINI, Approach R50 or SkyTrak MAX can be easily moved around as needed. Exceptions to this are the EYE MINI LITE, which must be connected to a power source at all times, and the Square Golf, which is only designed for indoor use.
Then there’s everything else. If you don’t have at least a net or mat, mobility is not an issue at all. Net setups are usually easy to set up, take down and transport. Screen and projector setups are usually less portable, but they can still be moved around.
Some simulator packages come with retractable screens, which is ideal for garages and basements.
Do you plan to have a dedicated place where your golf simulator will always be located, or will there be times when you need to move it?
Maybe you travel periodically and want to be able to easily take it with you. Maybe you just want to pack it away during the summer, when weather permits getting out to the driving range or golf course.
If you plan to move your simulator around often, you certainly don’t want a ceiling-mounted or ground-based system. You also may not want a full simulator setup with screen and projector unless it’s marketed as retractable. If you’re planning to invest in a net only, then make sure that transporting it is straightforward.
3. Tracking
Consider the tracking system that measures your ball and club data. Is it stereoscopic, photometric, quadrascopic, radar-based, infrared, etc.?
Some tracking systems are generally superior to others, which is where much of the price difference comes from.
For example, while the Phigolf 2 is very inexpensive, its sensor is never going to be as accurate or produce as many detailed data parameters as systems that cost at least 10x more.
The mid-tier SkyTrak, which is camera-based, is excellent in comparison, but many people don’t like its shot delay, which can be up to a few seconds long. The SkyTrak+ improves on this shot delay but not by a whole lot.
Then there are top-tier professional systems like the GCQuad and EYE XO. These are generally going to give you the most accurate and most reliable output, with the shortest lag between the shot being hit and the ball flight showing in the software.
It’s also worth emphasizing the two main types of tracking systems: photometric and radar. In general, radar tracking is more reliable outdoors but requires more space around the golfer, while photometric (camera-based) tracking really shines indoors.
Generally, but not always, the more expensive the simulator, the better the tracking system. Look into the performance of each and decide how you weigh the importance of entertainment vs. game improvement.
4. Software
You should also consider what kinds of things you want to do, games you want to play, and activities you want to take part in on your golf simulator.
Different simulator systems will support different software, but some golf simulators can only be used with a specific in-house solution.

With that budget, my top recommendation would definitely be a Uneekor EYE XO simulator, which mounts on the ceiling and is out of the way. The best ones I would point you to are the SwingBay (Rain or Shine Golf) and SIG12 (The Indoor Golf Shop) packages. I recommend TGC 2019 software (it has a massive course selection) but GSPro and Uneekor Refine are also great options. Go ahead and click on both of those links and check out the customization and financing options.
As an alternative, there’s the Foresight Sports GC3 SIG12 simulator with full simulator flooring consisting of a hitting strip surrounded by a putting green. Just keep in mind that the GC3 unit rests on the floor, so it may be vulnerable to shanked balls. Another alternative is the Uneekor QED system which is a little bit more affordable than the EYE XO but has a few less features.

Are you talking about the OptiShot Golf-In-A-Box 4? The OptiShot isn’t really considered a serious golf simulator in terms of accuracy and game improvement. It’s great for entertainment, but if you want a full simulator bay at low cost, you’re better off getting something like the Garmin Approach R10 SIG10 Package unless your budget only allows for an OptiShot system.

I really like the features of being able to play games like the HD Golf Sims come with but quite the budget for a lot of bays. I do like the Eye XO as well but not sure if it has the same game features that HD Golf offers. Want to be able to please your competitive golfer to your person that is just coming for a drink. We would also like to be able to hold tournaments and long drive competitions so we want that ability as well. If we need to go for HD golf we will, would love to hear your opinion. I am considering a simulator for a sports bar type setup within a very high end, exclusive club setup. The interest is to make the simulator usable for a variety of users, ranging from beginners wanting to start, coaching, training, practice, game play, tournaments and pure entertainment with arcade like games. Being a bar, would think it very useful to have auto tee features, have the ability to simulate a variety of play surface conditions and have the ability to link to the billing system for auto stopping play when times up for chosen play package. Would love to hear from you about similar considerations and perhaps most suitable package. i have been through the commercial guide, but it seems to be written in oct 21 and so wonder if you might be aware of newer products in the market worthy of consideration. Hi there. The commercial guide had its last substantial update at that time but it’s still up-to-date; it’s just that nothing new has really come out since then that we think deserves to be listed.
It sounds like cost isn’t really an issue for you. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure of a simulator system that would fulfill all of the conditions you listed out of the box. However, there is one simulator I would suggest that I think will come close: the new Golfzon TwoVision. It features a hydraulic swing plate, auto tee system, and multi-surface hitting mat. They may offer an integratable play timer but you’d have to discuss it with them. When it comes to simulating different surfaces on a hitting mat such as thick rough and sand, it’s very difficult if not impossible to do, which is why people typically don’t bother with it.
Alternatively, instead of an all-in-one system, you could do a mix-and-match type of thing, getting something like the Uneekor EYE XO and buying an auto-tee mat separately. This would be more economical, and the EYE XO has very rich software options.

Yes, you’d want a storefront, especially if the business is situated in an area with a lot of foot traffic.
Regarding the EYE XO, E6 CONNECT does not come with it in the package but it can be integrated separately at extra cost. The EYE XO comes with View software (in-house) which is great for practice but doesn’t provide any course play. If I were starting a sim business and setting up an EYE XO bay, I would hook it up with The Golf Club 2019 or GSPro before anything else — tons of courses, game modes, and online play.

Hi there. I recommend the EYE XO launch monitor as part of something like the SIG10 package or Carl’s Place package, depending on the size of your space. The EYE XO is mounted 9-10 feet above the ground and 3.5 feet in front of the hitting zone — you can view a diagram here. You should try and have the screen around 10 feet away from the hitting zone. The mounting location for the projector will mostly depend on the size of the screen and the projector’s throw ratio. Enclosures are usually 8-10 feet high.

Ah, gotcha. To be honest, you don’t need to spend that much for a space of that size. A GCQuad or EYE XO simulator would pretty much be at the top when it comes to entertainment and accuracy. And you’re in luck: Rain or Shine Golf’s showroom (location here) is in southwest Charlotte.
