Cobra OPTM MAX-K Driver - 3 Perspectives

Today, we’ll be reviewing the Cobra OPTM MAX-K driver.

The MAX-K is the “maximum forgiveness” model in Cobra’s OPTM family of drivers, with a combined MOI of 13K over three axes. It boasts a stretched footprint that minimizes Products of Inertia (POI), with H.O.T. Face Technology and a fixed backweight for stability.

How does the OPTM MAX-K actually perform when put to the test? How does it compare to the DS-ADAPT MAX-K and OPTM X? Who is it best suited for? Is it worth putting in the bag?

Here’s what will be covered in the review:

Read on to learn what you need to know to make an informed purchase.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.

What are the reviews like?

The Cobra OPTM MAX-K driver won a gold medal on the Golf Digest 2026 Hot List. It has been praised by consumers, with a 5/5 average rating on the Cobra store, and has been received positively overall by critics.

What People Like

  • incredible forgiveness
  • consistent performance across the face
  • great feel
  • an improvement over past MAX-K drivers

What People Don’t Like

  • distance is lacking
  • spin is on the high side
  • look isn’t to everyone’s tastes

The Features

The OPTM MAX-K driver has a stretched, balanced, forgiving shape engineered through advanced supercomputing. The MOI is just over 10K on the horizontal and vertical axes, and just under 13K if you include the third axis.

At the same time, Cobra minimizes products of inertia (POI) as much as possible in an effort to achieve truer and more meaningful directional forgiveness. Cobra says that the POI is 50% less than previous models.

Other features of the OPTM MAX-K driver include:

  • a forged face insert with H.O.T. Face technology (optimized face thickness); the result is significantly more ball speed and spin consistency across the entire face
  • fixed 11g backweight that shifts the center of gravity low and back for a high level of stability and forgiveness

Stock Info

The OPTM MAX-K driver is available in , 10.5°, and 12° standard lofts at 460 CC. Also available are:

  • Women’s OPTM MAX-K: a unique Earl Grey colourway; loft, shaft, and grip options tailored to women to maximize their performance
  • Junior OPTM MAX-K: offered with a special Cobra Junior shaft in different length and weight configurations
  • OPTM MAX-D: has a draw-biased design with more mass towards the heel

Included is a FutureFit33 adjustable hosel that allows you to get more granular than ever before. It features 33 unique loft and lie settings that can be adjusted by ±2 degrees, and the face angle remains square in each setting thanks to a SMARTPAD design.

The stock shafts are the Project X Denali Blue Frost CB 60 and Mitsubishi Kai’li Dark Waves White 60/Blue 60/Red 50. The stock grip is the SuperStroke Crossline 360. Custom options are available.

The Performance

In the sections that follow, I’ll talk about my experience with the OPTM MAX-K driver. Let’s jump right in.

Distance

Ball speeds produced by this driver are on the low side relative to other 2026 drivers, and I don’t see a significant improvement on this front compared to the DS-ADAPT MAX-K.

Clubhead speed and carry distances are good but not great.

However, for players who are focused on hitting fairways first and foremost, the length of this driver is perfectly acceptable. Most higher handicappers would rather be in the fairway and 10-15 yards farther away than in the rough and 10-15 yards closer to the green.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness and stability are the crown jewels of the OPTM MAX-K driver.

It’s the best forgiveness I’ve seen in any Cobra driver yet, particularly when it comes to dispersions and directional forgiveness. Ball speed retention on mis-hits seems weaker but is still very good.

Cobra also separately offers a 14g weight which, when put in the back port, can up the forgiveness factor even more.

Flight & Playability

Typical trajectories with the OPTM MAX-K driver are mid-high. The driver isn’t particularly conducive to shaping shots.

I was only seeing a very slight increase in launch angle compared to the X model by about 0.1°, which I was a little surprised by. However, my average spin rate was significantly higher by around 450-500 RPMs.

This contributes to a pretty high apex height and helps keep the ball in the air, but it also makes the flight less penetrating, which often results in less distance. I would have liked to see a higher launch angle with less spin.

The Look

Like its predecessor, the DS-ADAPT MAX-K, the OPTM MAX-K driver sports a dark theme with carbon fiber texturing on the sole and detailing in various monochromatic shades.

It’s a similar aesthetic overall, although the OPTM goes for a high-gloss crown instead of the matte finish of the previous generation.

As expected from the max-MOI model in the family, the OPTM MAX-K has more of a stretched profile from front to back (and a slightly shallower face) compared to the X model, but it’s still quite symmetrical.

One weight port sits at the very back of the club. Unlike the DS-ADAPT MAX-K, it’s hidden on a side ridge so that it’s not readily visible from the sole perspective.

The Sound & Feel

The feel of the OPTM MAX-K driver isn’t very different from the X model. It’s solid, firm, and quite balanced, though it is a touch softer on impact, which is nice because many people consider the X to be too firm.

The sound at impact is tight, somewhat muted, and a little bit lower-pitched than the X model.

The face is one of the less responsive ones I’ve tested for the 2026 season, but it’s still fine. Sound and feel hold up very well across the face, which is great for forgiveness but does make mis-hit feedback somewhat murky.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a fairway finder and aren’t concerned with maximizing distance off the tee, the Cobra OPTM MAX-K driver should be one of your top considerations. Mid and high handicappers (15-20+) should have the most success with this stick.

While the gains of the OPTM MAX-K over its predecessor are limited, and while the ball flight may not suit everyone, it delivers everything you would expect from a max-forgiveness driver.

If you would otherwise benefit from a draw bias, try the MAX-D model, which has comparable forgiveness to the MAX-K.
