In this review, I’ll be taking a comprehensive look at the PING G440 MAX driver.
The G440 MAX is designed to be PING’s most forgiving driver ever, with more speed and distance than the previous generation.
A lighter configuration with a longer 46″ shaft is meant to help foster more clubhead speed, a higher launch, and more carry. In addition, a faster face is engineered to deliver more speed and distance.
How does the G440 MAX driver actually perform when put to the test? How does it compare to the G430 MAX? Who is it best suited for? Is it worth putting in the bag?
Here’s what will be covered in the review:

Note: Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.
What are the reviews like?
The PING G440 MAX driver won a gold medal on the Golf Digest 2025 Hot List. It boasts a 4.8/5 customer rating on the PING website, a 4.8/5 (94% recommended) rating on Golf Galaxy, and has also been rated highly by critics.
What People Like
- keeps the ball in play
- easy to swing
- more forgiving than the G430 MAX
- surprisingly good impact sound
What People Don’t Like
- some find distance to be underwhelming
- some dislike the sole aesthetic
The Features
Key features of the G440 MAX driver include:
- Carbonfly Wrap Crown: this saves discretionary weight which is reallocated to lower the CG, leading to increased MOI and a more muted, pleasant impact sound.
- Free Hosel: weight is removed from a section of the hosel and reallocated to lower the CG to record levels — the result is more distance and forgiveness.
- Low Face: the height of the G440 MAX’s face is lower than previous models, which enables it to be thinner and hotter for higher ball speeds across the face.
- Tungsten Backweight: a 29-gram backweight can be moved into neutral, draw or fade positions for ball flight adjustability.
- Trajectory Tuning 2.0 Hosel: this lightweight, aerodynamic, adjustable hosel offers eight loft and lie combinations to fine-tune your trajectory.
Stock Info
The G440 MAX driver is available in 9°, 10.5°, and 12° standard lofts at 460cc.
Also available is the G440 MAX High Launch (HL) driver. This custom option combines a lighter aluminum backweight with a lighter stock shaft and grip; it’s designed so that golfers with slower swing speeds can boost their clubhead speed and distance.
There are many stock shaft options offered at no upcharge including the PING Tour 2.0 Chrome 65, Mitsubishi TENSEI 1K Black 65, and Project X Denali Red.
The stock grips are the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360, Tour Velvet Cord, and Lamkin UTx Lite, all of which are compatible with Arccos sensors.

The Performance
In the sections that follow, I’ll talk about my experience with the G440 MAX driver. Let’s jump right in.
Distance
While the improvements in the G440 MAX that are supposed to contribute to increased ball speeds and distance may seem significant at first glance, my field test indicates that ball speed gains over the G430 MAX are pretty marginal — maybe 1-2 mph.
At the same time, launch angles seem to be a touch higher, with the same or slightly higher spin. For many golfers, this will translate to no substantial distance gain over the previous generation.
Having said this, the G440 MAX is a powerful driver, relatively speaking. And given the distance advantage the G430 MAX had over the G425 MAX, you really can’t ask for much more.
Forgiveness
The G440 MAX driver is incredibly forgiving.
Overall ball speed preservation (loss of ball speed on mis-hits) appears to be slightly better than the G430 MAX based on my testing. On the other hand, there seems to be slightly more variability in ball speeds from shot to shot.
Dispersions are very small, but I didn’t see a noticeable improvement in this regard compared to the previous generation. If anything, it feels like strikes low on the face perform a little better.
Playability/Trajectory
The G440 MAX driver tends to deliver a high launch — higher than the G430 MAX. This can be especially advantageous if you have a slower swing speed or could benefit from a higher flight.
The adjustable backweight on the sole can introduce a moderate flight bias depending on if the weight is slid towards the heel (draw) or toe (fade). The launch will increase ever so slightly if you have the weight in the center (back) position.
Spin rates are at least as high as the G430 MAX and are pretty comparable to the G425 MAX. Despite this, descent angles are quite shallow and rollout is good.
Workability is naturally limited, but the adjustable sole weight combined with the adjustable hosel give you a lot of leeway to dial in the ideal setting for you.
The Look
The G440 MAX driver has a similar overall design philosophy to the G430 MAX. But one of the most notable differences is that its footprint appears slightly more compact and pear-shaped, with a slightly lower face.
The driver introduces a Carbonfly Wrap, bringing the look to a new level. This lightweight carbon composite piece covers the back half of the driver and wraps into the toe and heel sections of the skirt. Also featured are Crown Turbulators which help to focus the ball at address.
The G440 MAX driver has a similar colour scheme to its predecessor, but with blue sole accents instead of yellow. It’s hard to say if I prefer this aesthetic over the previous generation, but it certainly has its own unique appeal.
The Sound & Feel
With the G440 MAX, PING continues the trend of delivering an improved sound and feel over the previous generation.
Based on my testing, the sound seems to be more muted than that of the G430. PING drivers have certainly come a long way from the old days of that very metallic, high-pitched “clang”.
Feel is explosive and responsive. I found the feel of the G440 MAX to be smoother than the G430, with a soft-yet-solid feel at impact. And the feel across the face is just as stable and consistently pleasant. I would say that even moderate mis-hits feel great off the face.
Feedback is about as informative as it is with the G430 MAX. It’s not super helpful, but you get a general idea of where you make contact.
Where To Buy This Driver Online
Online availability of PING golf clubs is more limited than other manufacturers.
One of the best places to customize and order a G440 MAX driver is Golf Galaxy. They are one of the largest golf retailers in the world, offering a club trade-in program, a 90-day Play Guarantee, and other benefits.
You can also check the stock at Global Golf and PGA TOUR Superstore. These merchants may offer club trade-ins, points programs, or other perks to enhance your shopping experience. Check out the HL version here.
Another place to check out the G440 MAX driver (new or used) is eBay. You can typically find deals here that you can’t find anywhere else.
Final Thoughts
The PING G440 MAX is undoubtedly a beast of a game-improvement driver, with outstanding forgiveness, plenty of distance, and an easy launch. Ball flight adjustability via a moveable sole weight and hosel adapter help a wide range of golfers find a configuration that works for them.
Performance gains over the G430 MAX, particularly in the areas of ball speed and forgiveness, are modest but real. PING has also continued to refine the impact sound; the G440 MAX is, in my opinion, the best-sounding PING driver yet, with the Carbonfly Wrap helping to take the driver to a new level of modernity.
This driver should appeal to many mid and high handicappers, as well as anyone across the handicap spectrum who needs help keeping the ball in play off the tee.
