PING i240 Irons - 3 Perspectives

Today, I’ll be reviewing the PING i240 irons.

The i240 is designed to be an accessible players iron. While this Tour-inspired cavity back has the looks, feel and control you’d associate with a players iron, it’s also forgiving and stable. Plus, it’s engineered to be easy to launch, even if you don’t have a high swing speed.

How does the i240 iron actually perform in our evaluation? How does it compare to the i230? Who is it best suited for? Is it worth putting in the bag?

Here’s what will be covered in the review:

Read on to learn what you need to know to make an informed purchase.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.

What are the reviews like?

The PING i240 irons enjoy a 4.8/5 (100% recommended) average rating on the PING website, and critic reception has been generally positive.

The Features

The PING i240 is built to look like a players iron while providing the forgiveness of a game-improvement iron.

As part of this, the iron features a lighter badge and elastomer insert which unlocks weight savings. The weight savings enabled by the iron’s design are redistributed towards the perimeter to:

  • increase MOI, stability and forgiveness
  • lower the center of gravity (CG) for a higher launch and greater stopping power

These effects are most pronounced in the mid and long irons. Other features include:

  • fewer and wider grooves that impart more spin for added control and consistency
  • a rounded leading edge with plenty of bounce for smooth turf interaction
  • a high-density toe screw and shaft tip weights for fine-tuning swing weight

Stock Info

The i240 irons are available in 3-UW.

The stock shaft is the Nippon N.S. PRO MODUS 3 Tour 115. PING offers an array of other steel and graphite shaft options including the PING Alta CB BlueTrue Temper Dynamic Gold, and PING AWT 3.0.

The stock grips are the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 and Tour Velvet Cord.

The Performance

In the sections that follow, I’ll talk about my experience with the i240 irons. Let’s jump right in.

Distance

During my test, I found that ball speeds and distance with the i240 irons are good, but barely above average relative to other 2025 irons.

While raw power isn’t something these irons are known for, my yardages and gapping were ideal, and carry distances are generally very good.

Forgiveness

The i240 is one of the most forgiving players irons out there right now. It’s a game-improvement level of forgiveness, with solid ball speed retention on mis-hits and fairly tight dispersions.

These irons may not be as forgiving as the G440, but there’s definitely enough forgiveness there assuming you have any level of consistency in your contact.

Playability/Trajectory

During my test, I found the i240 irons to produce a high launch, which is atypical given that most players irons produce a mid or even a mid-low launch and rely on the golfer’s speed and ballstriking ability to generate height.

However, this is not unwelcome given that the i240 is designed to appeal to a wide range of skill levels.

The mid and long irons are pretty effortless to get up in the air. I find that the majority of the stopping power (which is superb) comes from high trajectories and steep landing angles rather than spin, although these irons can spin plenty in any case.

Workability and controllability are very good, but I wouldn’t consider them quite on the level of a blade. The irons are highly playable out of a variety of lies.

The Look

Many reviewers of the i240 irons have said that they aren’t fans of the look compared to preceding models (i230, i210, etc.). Coming from someone who never evaluated those older models extensively or developed an attachment to them, I think the i240 looks great.

It’s a cavity back that doesn’t really look like a cavity back — it looks sleeker and more blade-like.

The i240 features a new dark carbon fiber region at the bottom of the badge. Some dislike this addition because it’s a departure from the cleaner chrome-dominant theme of previous models, but I like it. I think it adds contrast and pop to the aesthetic and gives the iron a modern touch.

Aside from that, the i240 has a player-preferred look consisting of a thin topline, shorter blade length, and fairly narrow sole. At the same time, the address look inspires some confidence for those who are not elite players.

The Sound & Feel

The i240 irons feel soft yet solid at impact. It’s a feel that is impressively pure and smooth given the cavity-back construction. The feel generally becomes firmer as you move away from the center of the face.

The sound at impact is mostly quiet and muted, but there is a clickiness to the sound that can be a little off-putting, and I consider it to be a weak point with these irons.

Mis-hit feedback is on the level of a forged players iron in terms of clarity and helpfulness. At the same time, mis-hits don’t feel excessively jarring or punishing.

Where To Buy These Irons Online

Online availability of PING golf clubs is more limited than other manufacturers.

One of the best places to customize and order a set of i240 irons is Golf Galaxy. They are one of the largest golf retailers in the world, offering a club trade-in program, a 90-day Play Guarantee, and other benefits.

You can also check the stock at Global Golf and PGA TOUR Superstore. These merchants may offer club trade-ins, points programs, or other perks to enhance your shopping experience.

Another place to check out i240 irons (new or used) is eBay. You can typically find deals here that you can’t find anywhere else.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re looking to make your first foray into players irons, you just want a great all-around iron, or you’re a higher handicapper who doesn’t want your hand held with chunky game-improvement irons, you should give the PING i240 serious consideration.

While performance improvements over the i230 are negligible, golfers of any skill level who don’t consider themselves purists will love the balanced package, from forgiveness to launch, control, and an attractive players look.
