TaylorMade 2025 P790 Iron - 3 Perspectives

In this comprehensive review, I’ll be taking a look at the TaylorMade 2025 P·790 irons, the 5th generation of the P790 which first debuted in 2017.

Like previous versions, it’s engineered for consistent distance, forgiveness, and a premium forged feel, but this latest iteration is designed to squeeze out the best performance yet in all the aforementioned categories along with improved gapping.

How do the 2025 P790 irons actually perform when put to the test? How do they compare to the 2023 model? Who are they best suited for? Are they worth putting in the bag?

Here’s what will be covered in the review:

Note: Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.

What are the reviews like?

The 2025 P790 irons won a gold medal on the Golf Digest 2025 Hot List and are praised by critics and consumers. They have a high rating (100% recommended) on the official TaylorMade store.

  • thin top line is very appealing from address
  • great distance and forgiveness
  • soft, pure feel
  • fantastic looks
  • consistent results
  • expensive
  • very limited performance gains over the 2023 model

The Features

The 2025 P·790 iron has an even thinner top line than the 2023 model. Its technologies work together to improve every aspect of performance, optimize spin and launch, and produce more ideal and consistent gapping through the set.

4340M Forged Steel Face

The face of the 2025 P790 iron is made of a new 4340M steel alloy.

This high-strength material is 20% stronger than the 4140 steel of the previous generation, resulting in higher ball speeds across the face as well as increasing the size of the sweet spot by up to 24% compared to the 2023 P790.

SpeedFoam Air

This is a proprietary, super-light urethane foam injected into the forged hollow-body head, just behind the face. It’s primarily designed to provide a premium feel and sound.

By utilizing SpeedFoam, optimizing each iron head individually with T-modal analysis, and stiffening key internal structures, TaylorMade was able to produce the best feel and sound of any P790 iron to date.

FLTD CG

This design, which stands for ‘Flighted Center of Gravity’, consists of a progressive CG that is lowest in the long irons for higher launch and higher in the short irons for more precise control.

TaylorMade engineers achieved this by using a 40g tungsten weight in the long irons to lower the CG, shifting tungsten towards the toe in the mid irons for higher MOI, and foregoing tungsten entirely in the short irons in order to raise the CG.

Stock Info

The 2025 P790 irons come in 4-AW (20°-49°). Sets and singles are available.

The stock steel shaft is the KBS TOUR LITE and the stock graphite shaft is the Mitsubishi MMT. The stock grip is the Golf Pride ZGRIP Plus2.

The Performance

In the sections that follow, I’ll talk about my experience with the 2025 P790 irons. Let’s jump right in.

Distance

As players’ distance irons, the 2025 P790 certainly can put out a lot of yards. Based on my testing, ball speeds are around 1 mph faster off the face (on average) compared to the 2023 P790, which is small but real.

The new 4340M forged face appears to have a noticeable impact here. Spin rates are similar to the previous generation, leading to slightly longer carry but just as much stopping power.

Forgiveness

TaylorMade claims that the sweet spot of the 2025 P790 is 24% larger than its predecessor.

I saw during my field test some minor indicators to support this, but overall, the dropoffs in ball speed and stability on off-center strikes (relative to the sweet spot) are very similar, if not virtually identical, to the 2023 model.

Ball speed preservation and dispersions are good as far as players’ distance irons go, with performance low on the face being particularly impressive.

Playability/Trajectory

The 2025 P790 iron tends to produce a mid-high trajectory with mid spin. The flight bias is neutral. I found launch in the long irons to be slightly higher than the 2023 model, which was welcome.

There is enough stopping power to have good control into the greens, but other P-Series models including the 770, 7CB, and 7MB have more potential in this respect.

Turf interaction is smooth, with the iron powering through the impact zone quite nicely. The increased sole radius makes the iron a little more versatile out of various lies.

Workability is middle-of-the-road; players shouldn’t have much trouble putting the desired shape on their shots.

The Look

Ever since their debut, the P790 irons were always known for their forged players’ shaping — maybe not as slim as a full-blown muscleback, but pretty close to it from the address perspective.

The 2025 model is no exception. This time around, however, the top line has been made even thinner than its predecessors for a slightly neater, cleaner look.

In addition, the sole radius has been increased and the leading edge is progressive. This contributes to smoother, more consistent turf interaction and more consistent contact.

The P790 irons have a Tour Satin Scratch finish which gives the iron a luxurious character. Unlike previous models which had the P790 logo on the heel side, the logo is centered on the back of the iron and is contained in a backbar with a mirrored finish, enhancing the overall visual presentation.

The 2025 P790 definitely has the most “playersy” looks of any P790 iron yet, but I can’t help but prefer the slightly thicker top line of the previous models. The P790 is meant to be the most forgiving P-Series iron and, as such, should inspire some confidence at address for those who aren’t scratch or low-handicap golfers.

The Sound & Feel

In my reviews of past P790 irons, I noted that they felt solid more than anything, with a resemblance to a traditional forged iron. You could also say this about the 2025 P790.

What sets this particular model apart, however, is how soft it feels. If you catch the ball well enough, it almost feels buttery-soft. At the same time, impact feels responsive and powerful, giving you the best of both worlds.

Sound is medium-pitched, non-reverberating, and seems slightly more muted than the 2023 model. Mis-hit feedback is informative but not overly punishing.

In my opinion, the 2025 P790 has the best feel of any P790 iron yet and is one of the best-feeling irons I’ve ever tried, period.

Where To Buy These Irons Online

You can order 2025 P790 irons with your choice of shaft and flex, or optionally do a full customization, via TaylorMade’s official store.

Another option is Global Golf. They offer various deals, a points rewards program, and a club trade-in program (UTry) to help you minimize the financial hit.

You can also buy 2025 P790 irons from Amazon or PGA TOUR Superstore.

Don’t forget about eBay, where you can often find unbeatable deals on new and used golf equipment.

Final Thoughts

It’s pretty remarkable how TaylorMade always finds a way to top the previous models when coming out with a new P·790.

In the case of the 2025 version, while the performance gains, namely marginally higher ball speeds and carry, are very small and almost imperceptible in launch monitor data, the iron has a significantly better feel and a fresh new look that makes it the best P790 iron to date.

As with previous iterations, the 2025 P790 is best suited for the golfer who wants a bit of everything. The steep price tag will be a barrier to some people, but there are options for financing and club trade-ins that can soften the blow considerably.
