When it comes to getting you and your golf bag around the golf course, there are several options available to you.

You can carry your bag on your shoulders, which is exhausting and not ideal. You can use a push or pull cart that is manual or electric-powered, which is more convenient.

It turns out, the best option that has been around for decades is the golf cart. Electric golf carts, in particular, are vehicles that can effortlessly transport 1-4 people (or more) without the fuel considerations that come with gas-powered carts.

If you’re interested in building an electric golf cart fleet or personally owning a cart for your golfing, you’ve come to the right place. Golf carts have been around for a long time, but these days, they’re more powerful and efficient than ever.

In recent years, a number of innovative companies have emerged to offer fantastic electric golf carts that make getting around the golf course an easy, pleasant experience. In this article, we’ll review and compare our picks for the best electric golf carts on the market.

We will consider electric golf carts with two wheels (scooters or bikes), three wheels (trikes), and four wheels.

Note: Golfstead has tested and/or conducted in-depth research into all of the products featured in this guide. Our editorial process for these rankings takes into account a mix of many factors which may include performance, reliability, usability, value for money, cost, and the general consensus from other users of the product. 1. Koppla Swift Motorcycle Electric Golf Cart

Koppla Swift Motorcycle Electric Golf Scooter - New Design

You can call the Koppla Swift a bike, a scooter, a motorcycle, or a golf cart. Whatever you call it, it’s a beauty that will certainly catch the attention of your peers.

The Koppla Swift has two wheels, which means that it requires balancing, but it’s also much more maneuverable and less expensive than the typical four-wheel cart. At the same time, it has a low center of gravity which adds comfort and makes balancing easier.

It was designed and developed by KOPPLA Moto, whose mission it is to lead the next generation in efficient, reliable and comfortable electric scooters.

Koppla is an impressive company that clearly has a lot of talent behind it. They manage to make high-quality electric carts with premium components and powerful motors and offer them at competitive prices relative to their competition.

What’s more, Koppla recently re-designed the cart and it now looks sleeker and better than ever.

Features

One of the first things you’ll notice about the cart is that the front wheel is larger than the back. This is an ideal “cruiser” design that provides more stability when traversing terrain.

Let’s talk about the motor: 2000W with 140Nm of torque, and a peak of 3500W in a few seconds. The max speed is 20 mph. It’s a motor that can handle practically any hill, whether in lush forested areas or on beautiful oceanside courses.

The powerful 60V, 25Ah, lithium-ion rechargeable battery is plug-and-play. It has a range of up to 40 miles, can last for 36 holes on a full charge, and can be easily swapped with a spare as needed.

Other features of the Koppla Swift electric golf cart include:

  • a full heavy-duty suspension for a smooth ride
  • a thick kickstand for stable parking
  • a kickstand switch that prevents accidental starting

The Koppla Swift can, of course, hold your bag, but not in the same way as other electric golf carts featured on this page. It’s basically rested in front of the seat and between the handlebars.

This electric cart is multi-purpose, being suitable for hunting, fishing, and other activities in addition to golf. It’s quiet, gives off no emissions, and requires little to no maintenance.

The cart has a maximum capacity of 350 lbs with a 6.3-inch ground clearance. The size is 87″L x 30″W x 46″H when the bag holder is attached.

A 67.2V 5A charger is included. Also included are rearview mirrors, a headlight, a cooler box, and a mountable storage box that can hold balls, scorecards, keys, and other small items. You can optionally replace the cooler in the back with a second seat.

Koppla is offering a 15-day money-back guarantee on this golf cart, and the price is very reasonable, so give it a try now!

2. Stewart Golf Q Follow Electric Golf Caddy

Stewart Golf Q Follow Electric Golf Caddy

The Q Follow is technically a golf cart, but it doesn’t transport people around the course in the traditional sense of the word. Rather, its purpose is solely to carry your golf bag.

This remarkable electric golf caddy was built by Stewart Golf, a UK-based company that for decades has built some of the finest golf trolleys in the world.

The Q Follow features three modes. Its signature mode is called Follow, where you place a handset on your belt or in your back pocket and the caddy will follow you wherever you walk.

This golf caddy currently has a perfect 5/5 average customer rating on the official Stewart Golf store, and it has received stellar ratings from critics. It earns a high placement on our list because of its quality and how well it has been been received.

Features

The Q Follow, which employs 7th-generation follow technology, has a completely new microcellular composite chassis. Compared to the X10 Follow, it’s 40% more compact when folded and has a 60% smaller footprint.

The electric caddy uses two 190W EcoDrive motors, also used in the X10 model, to deliver a new level of performance efficiency. It has four non-metallic wheels, adding another layer of stability to its operation.

The modes of the caddy are:

  1. Manual: allows you to guide the caddy like a traditional push cart.
  2. Remote: allows you to fully control the caddy with an included handset.
  3. Follow: allows the caddy to move in the direction of the handset.

The Q Follow handset contains a rechargeable lithium battery and has a range of up to 50 meters.

Other features include:

  • a handle in the hinged front chassis which enables one-handed carrying
  • a retractable stabilizer that automatically deploys as the caddy is unfolded
  • automatic downhill braking
  • a dual soft-touch handle with handset holder
  • a scorecard holder with magnetic closure
  • a three-position strap with silicone bag pads for secure bag holding
  • four accessory attachment points

The Q Follow runs on a next-generation SmartPower lithium battery rated at 384 Wh. It has a capacity of 18 or 36 holes and a plug-and-play connection (just drop it into the slot).

In addition, the battery has Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to connect your smartphone via the Stewart Golf app and monitor power consumption and battery usage in real time.

The folded size of the Q Follow golf trolley is 21.46″ x 23.62″ x 12.52″, and the unit weighs 33.5 lbs excluding the battery.

Available in Matte Black and Carbon finishes that are unique from unit to unit, the Q Follow is very stylish and luxurious and is sure to turn heads on the course.

As stated above, the Q Follow is only meant to transport your golf bag. If this is what you’re looking for, you absolutely can’t go wrong with it. The quality of the build is fantastic, it’s very intuitive to use, and Stewart Golf customer service is outstanding.

3. Golf E-Bike W/ Divnick Golf Bag Carrier

Golf E-Bike W/ Divnick Golf Bag Carrier

Most people who think of a golf cart wouldn’t think of an electric bike, but this offer is so fantastic for golf that we just had to give it a feature.

This powerful combo consists of a step-thru folding e-bike and the Divnick Auto-Pivot Golf Bag Carrier. What makes it so great is how affordable it is at well under $2000. It can be folded and transported in a trunk, or you can alternatively ride it to and from the golf course.

Divnick Golf has several e-bikes to choose from depending on your preferences and location.

Features

All of the e-bikes that Divnick Golf offers include the necessary features for use on the golf course, namely:

  • 20” x 4” fat turf-friendly tires which can handle various types of terrain
  • step through frames which make it easy to get on and off between every shot
  • full front fenders on which you can add a diamond-plate rubber mudguard that is part of the Bag Carrier kit
  • pedal assist
  • an adjustable front suspension
  • a soft seat with a suspension post for smooth and comfortable riding

These e-bikes come with 500 or 750 watts of power from brushless motors inside the rear hub. The “Intelligent Pedal Assist” senses how much you want the motor to help you with up to nine levels of assist available.

Or, if you just want to ride, you can use the throttle and ride it like a scooter; you don’t have to pedal at all if you don’t want to.

The lithium-ion batteries are rated at 48V or 52V with at least 15Ah. They are lockable and have a range of 30-48 miles depending on whether you’re using pedal assist or not. They take 5-6 hours to fully charge, and in our experience, can last well over 54 holes on a single charge.

Other features of the e-bikes include:

  • an LCD display that shows info such as speed, distance, pedal assist mode, and battery level
  • an electric horn and kickstand
  • a Shimano gear system with 7 speed settings
  • a heavy-duty rear rack that can support any golf bag
  • an on-board USB charging port
  • a bottle holder
  • mounting brackets for an optional front rack

The e-bikes can fold up and fit in a trunk. They weigh around 70 pounds.

Next is the Divnick Bag Carrier. This bag carrier, made in the USA, mounts on the rear rack and holds any size of golf bag securely with straps and buckles.

It also has a proprietary patent-pending quick-attach system that allows you to easily attach and remove the carrier in just a couple of seconds, such as when you’re folding and loading the e-bike.

Probably the most attractive feature of the Divnick Bag Carrier is that it’s designed so that the attached bag serves as a kickstand that holds the e-bike in place on any slope. When you mount the e-bike to set off after your shot, the bag automatically pivots back to an upright position.

This bag carrier is built for function and convenience. And when you pair it with a quality golf e-bike, you win big. One local pro commented, “It’s as if e-bikes were created just for golf. They are a perfect combination.”

The e-bikes and bag carrier are currently offered at a significant discount with introductory pricing. The price will eventually get hiked up, so we recommend jumping on it as soon as possible if you’re interested.

E-Z-GO NEW Freedom RXV ELiTE Lithium Golf Cart

E-Z-GO is one of the most respected makers of golf carts in the world. The company was founded in 1954 by brothers Billy and Beverly Dolan and has become a world leader in transportation vehicles.

Their latest Freedom RXV ELiTE Lithium cart is an update to the previous model which was one of their most popular electric carts, and it’s also on the affordable side relative to their other offerings.

5. Fat Tire “Rebel Trike XR” Electric Golf Scooter

Fat Tire "Rebel Trike XR" 3-Wheel Electric Golf Scooter - Side View

The Rebel Trike XR by Fat Tire deserves a prominent feature on this list because:

  • it is lightweight and less damaging to the turf than a traditional golf cart
  • its three-wheel design allows for more maneuverability while being nearly as stable as a four-wheel cart
  • it has a dual-battery design that is designed to last two full rounds of golf
  • it handles wet conditions very well

Many would argue that the Rebel Trike XR is even easier to ride than a bicycle. It was built in response to the most common complaints customers had about previous Fat Tire scooters.

Do note that the Rebel Trike XR is designed to seat one person, so it’s best for solo play or if your buddies have their own means of getting around.

Features

The Rebel Trike XR electric golf scooter uses a high-torque, differential AC motor that is waterproof. This powerful, high-performance motor handles hills and other terrain very nicely.

The scooter can move as fast as 15mph, but your speed may vary depending on the terrain. You can use engine braking to stay in control while going downhill.

The Rebel Trike XR employs a “quick-swap” battery system with two 72-volt lithium-ion batteries. The batteries take roughly 6-8 hours to fully charge and can be swapped out in a few seconds between rounds, without using tools. The range can go beyond 36 holes but depends largely on the terrain and the weight of the rider.

Other features of the Rebel Trike XR include:

  • a finger-actuated brake lock that enables easy hill parking
  • a large cushioned seat for added comfort
  • front and rear suspension for a smooth ride
  • a heavy-duty aluminum bag holder that can hold the largest bags
  • a handlebar mounted platform that can hold tees, scorecards, pencils, and other accessories

The Rebel Trike XR is designed for one person weighing up to 300 lbs. The cart weighs 210 lbs (not including a bag), has a 52″ wheel base, and has dimensions of 85″L x 30″W x 46″ H.

An array of accessories are included such as a sand bottle for divot repair, drink and tee holders, 110V outlet charger, LED headlight, and scorecard holder.

This scooter gives one of the smoothest, most comfortable rides ever, and we think it’s very reasonably priced given the features and performance.

6. Club Car Tempo Lithium-Ion Golf Cart

Club Car Tempo Lithium-Ion Golf Cart - Side View

We can’t write a golf cart guide without including a Club Car model. Club Car was founded in 1958 and has become one of the leading manufacturers of golf carts.

What really sets Club Car apart from other brands is their expansive selection of different types of golf carts. They offer many of their cart models in both electric and gas-powered forms, but their Tempo Lithium-Ion cart is unique.

Club Car’s Tempo Lithium-Ion Cart is a 100% electric golf cart that uses a lithium-ion battery instead of the typical lead-acid battery found in most other electric carts.

Features

The Club Car Tempo Lithium-Ion Golf Cart uses a 4.7 horsepower AC drive system.

There are five speed settings over the range of 5-15 mph. There are two acceleration settings: traditional and aggressive. The aggressive setting will allow you to accelerate and decelerate more quickly.

Other features of this cart include:

  • self-compensating double-reduction steering
  • dual hydraulic shocks along with an independent leaf spring for front suspension
  • self-adjusting rear-wheel mechanical drum brakes
  • a foot-operated multi-lock parking brake

Additional Info

As mentioned above, the Tempo Lithium-Ion Cart is powered by a lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries are generally superior to lead-acid batteries in every way except cost.

This one, in particular, charges twice as fast and lasts longer, allowing you to get in more rounds on a single charge. The lithium-ion battery also conserves energy and saves you 50% in electricity costs.

The golf cart has a curb weight of 699 lbs, a 65.5″ wheelbase, and is a two-seater. There is 4.5 inches of ground clearance. Molded-in colour (standard) or optional painted metallic colours are available.

The warranty depends on the specific component of the cart and range from two years to life.

Many golf & country clubs have upgraded their fleets with the Tempo Lithium-Ion Golf Cart and are very impressed by its performance.

7. Garia Luxury Golf Car

Garia Luxury Golf Car - White, Corner View

Willing to pay a premium for the best of the best? Check out this high-end golf cart by Garia.

Garia, a Danish company, has historically worked with many high-end German automotive enterprises to produce some of the most advanced, state-of-the-art golf carts in the world.

Garia offers many different electric carts, but this one is designed specifically for the golf course and is more affordable. Via (US) and Monaco (EU) models can be used for general street driving and are ideal for golf towns and communities.

What’s great about Garia is that they allow you to customize your cart extensively, from the roof material to the body colour, seats, rims, model variations, and even MANSORY modifications.

Features

The Garia Luxury Golf Car uses a high-efficiency 3-phase AC motor with maximum 15 horsepower. It’s faster than many other golf carts, able to move forward at a max speed of 19 mph and in reverse at a max speed of 6 mph.

So many of the features of the Garia Luxury Golf Car are customizable. Some of the constants are:

  • an automotive-style, soft-touch dashboard
  • a roof designed to drain water efficiently
  • LED head and tail lights
  • golf ball and tee holders in the dashboard
  • an ice box with drain integrated into the dashboard
  • a storage area behind the seat for multiple golf bags
  • cup holders with rubber grip inserts
  • brushed stainless-steel entry panels
  • a USB outlet

This actually barely scratches the surface of possible features, and moreover, features are subject to change and may depend on local availability.

For your Garia Golf Car, you can choose a lead-acid battery or lithium-ion battery rated at 2000 cycles. A whole host of custom colours are available.

It’s important to note that a Garia golf cart will cost at least $14,000, and in most cases, substantially more than this. If you’re interested, I strongly recommend going through all the different customization options on this page and getting in touch with Garia to discuss.

8. Yamaha Drive2 AC Electric Golf Car

Yamaha Drive2 AC Electric Golf Car - Side View

Another excellent golf cart manufacturer worth featuring is Yamaha, a Japanese company that deals in motorized vehicles.

Yamaha’s Drive2 is their second iteration of the original Drive Series introduced in 2006. It benefits from modern technologies, upgraded body styling and colours, and various new features meant to enhance comfort and convenience.

Features

Yamaha offers different technologies for their Drive2 carts, one of which is the fully electric alternating current.

This electric golf cart uses a 48V AC motor with a 4.4 horsepower output rating and a motor control unit built by Toyota Industries.

The Drive2’s proprietary HybriCore Chassis consists of a welded robotic steel frame protected by a full-immersion multi-step phosphate treatment, electro-deposition epoxy-based coating, and electrostatic-applied polyester/urethane powder topcoat.

The body consists of a custom-formulated thermoplastic olefin, meticulously painted with an automotive-grade high-luster polyurethane. The white and beige cart colours use polypropylene that is injection-moulded.

Other features of the Yamaha Drive2 AC Electric Golf Car include:

  • self-compensating double reduction helical rack-and-pinion steering
  • a proprietary Tru-Track II independent strut suspension for the front wheels
  • swing arm, coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers for rear wheel suspension

The Drive2 AC has a limited warranty of four years. Available colours include metallic blue, beige, green, red, white, and teal.

All things considered, this cart is fairly affordable, with a price of less than $10,000. You can schedule a demo as well as equip the cart with a YamaTrack GPS system.

Buying Guide

Investing in a means of transportation for the golf course is a critical decision. It’s important to choose something that will not only suit your needs, but also be reliable.

Most good electric golf carts, including the ones reviewed on this page, give you everything you need for a pleasant golf experience free of lugging around your heavy golf bag.

With that said, there are some factors that you should consider before making a decision about a particular model. They are:

1. Features & Specs

ELLWEE Easy Resort Electric Cart - handlebars & side mirror

There are a ton of features, some quite important and some less important, that a golf cart could potentially have. These include:

  • an overhead canopy to protect you from direct sunlight and rain
  • a windshield to protect you from wind, weather conditions, and errant golf balls
  • a GPS for tracking
  • coolers and accessory storage
  • the quality of the wheels and tires
  • the top speed and speed settings
  • safety mechanisms for hills or hazards
  • a remote or follow function in the case of an electric caddy

It’s obviously not necessary to have every feature under the sun. More is great, but this will also drive up the price substantially.

We don’t recommend a cart (aside from a bag-carrying caddy) that cannot travel at least 10 mph. Generally, the maximum speed a golf cart is legally allowed to travel is 25 mph in the USA. However, you shouldn’t ever feel the need to travel at this kind of speed because it’s not the purpose of a golf cart.

Depending on whether you want to use your electric golf cart just for rounds or also for traveling around a golf resort or gated community, you may want to ensure that your cart has headlights, side and rear-view mirrors as well.

2. New Vs. Used

When purchasing something as pricey as an electric golf cart, many people turn to buying used vehicles as a way to save a substantial amount of money.

If the cart in question is something relatively affordable like the Koppla Swift or Stewart Golf Q Follow, we recommend buying it new if you have the budget for it. For more expensive carts that cost $10,000 or more, it can be a wise financial choice to go used, but you’ll have to do your homework.

In general, what are the pros and cons of buying new vs. used? It’s essentially the same idea as buying a new vs. used car.

New electric golf carts can obviously be quite a bit more expensive, but their main advantage is peace of mind and assurance. With new carts, the chances of something going wrong are far less likely, and in many cases, they have a slight edge in performance.

Used electric golf carts will save you money, but they come with higher risk that you need to minimize by doing your due diligence. Used carts will typically be less reliable and demand more repairs over the long term.

We could write an entire guide on buying used golf vehicles, but this particular guide isn’t meant for that. Instead, we’ll briefly mention a few things.

First, check the age and amp-hours of the cart’s battery — if the amp hours are more than 55,000 or so, the cart will need an overhaul. Second, check the repair and TLC history and warranty. Third, take the cart for a test drive and note anything unusual about its operation.

Ask the owner of a used electric golf cart as many questions as possible. The more questions you ask and the more information you have, the lower your risk will be.

3. Battery Type

ELLWEE Electric Cart - battery indicator

When it comes to electric golf carts, there are two main types of batteries: lead-acid and lithium-ion. Lead-acid batteries themselves can be further divided into types like gel, AGM, and flooded.

Lead-acid batteries are a much older technology that have been used to reliably power electric golf carts for decades. Lithium-ion batteries are much newer.

As a rule, lithium-ion batteries outclass lead-acid batteries in just about every way, although they are quite a bit more expensive. Here are the major differences:

  • Weight: lithium-ion batteries are, in most cases, significantly lighter than lead-acid batteries. This allows lithium-ion carts to carry more extra weight and reach higher speeds more quickly.
  • Charges: lithium-ion batteries not only charge faster than lead-acid batteries, but they also tend to last longer on a single charge and have a longer cycle life in general.
  • Maintenance: lithium-ion batteries don’t need to be checked or maintained, unlike lead-acid batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are also more eco-friendly because they require less energy to charge and don’t contain hazardous materials.

The bottom line is that if you can accommodate the added cost of a lithium-ion battery, you should always choose it over a lead-acid battery.

There is an exception to this, however: you may not like the altered feel and handling that the lighter weight of a lithium-ion battery brings. In such a case, you may prefer the added weight and stability of a lead-acid battery.

4. Warranty

When you’re dealing with something as expensive as an electric golf cart, some kind of insurance against damage, malfunction or failure is important.

Electric golf cart components are built to last for many years, but sometimes, things can go wrong relatively early on. If some part of your cart doesn’t work as intended or stops working altogether, warranties can cover some or all of the repair costs.

Good electric golf carts offer a limited warranty of at least one year, but it depends on the specific part. Some components (e.g. the frame) may have a multi-year warranty or even a lifetime warranty. Used carts will obviously come with shorter warranty periods or even none at all.

When considering an electric golf cart, always check the warranty terms. You may consider purchasing an extended warranty if one is available.

5. Price

Price tag graphic

The price of an electric golf cart can vary wildly depending on type, features, build, capacity, add-ons, and other factors. They can range in price from a couple thousand dollars to $70,000+ for the most luxurious models.

Features like windshields, roofs, and number of seats have a big influence on price. This is why, for example, having a long-bodied cart with two additional seats can add many thousands of dollars to the cost.

Another important factor when it comes to price is number of wheels. In this article, we include two-wheel bikes and a three-wheel “trike” that are substantially less expensive than most traditional four-wheel carts except for caddies. Fewer wheels will mean a little less stability and reliability, but also greater maneuverability.

The main goal for most golfers is to get themselves and their bag from point A to point B on the golf course. With that in mind, you should go for something that gives you the performance, features, and specs you need without blowing out your budget. And as we’ve said before, buying a used cart is a riskier proposition but will normally save you a substantial amount of money.

You may also be able to finance your electric golf cart, and you can discuss that with the vendor.

A Note On Fleet Purchases

Many people interested in electric golf carts are golf course owners looking to create a fleet for their members and players.

In this case, you can often get a discounted wholesale price when buying in bulk. Don’t forget to inquire about this.

There are other potential options too. You could save even more money buying used, but buying new comes with significant advantages. You could also lease.

When deciding which electric golf carts would be best for your course, consider the average age of your members and how many of them would appreciate the awesome looks and control of a Koppla Swift vs. the extra stability of a 4-wheel E-Z-GO.

Conclusion

An electric golf cart is the ultimate form of golf transportation. These vehicles reliably transport you, your golf gear, and 1-3 additional passengers around a golf course or country club in a modern and eco-friendly way.

Of course, carts that transport both people and bags are much more pricey than push carts and electric caddies, but it’s for good reason. Their biggest advantages are stability, protection, and the ability to travel with your buddies and have conversations in between shots.

Whether you’re interested in buying a fleet for your course, leasing, or owning one yourself so you can use it as much as you want, electric golf carts eliminate the need to walk or haul a heavy golf bag, allowing you to conserve as much energy as possible for each shot and shoot lower scores.

A quality, reliable electric golf cart can be a huge asset for your golfing life. Finding one that can meet your needs is certainly possible with some research.

Each of the cart options reviewed above offer excellent value for the cost. We’ve given you the information you need to make a decision; now it’s up to you to go the rest of the way.

If you can, we recommend reading reviews of carts or getting insights from retailers and manufacturers. This will help you a lot in the decision-making process.
