Cobra AEROJET Driver - 3 Perspectives

Today I’ll be reviewing the Cobra AEROJET driver.

Featuring a unique combination of patented PWR technologies as well as a new aerodynamic design, the AEROJET is designed to pump out maximum speed along with low spin, high launch and forgiveness. It’s the most versatile model in the AEROJET line, aimed at amateur and Tour players alike.

Does the AEROJET driver set a new bar in performance compared to previous models like the LTDx? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Who is it best suited for? Is it worth putting in the bag?

Read on to find out what you need to know to make an informed purchase.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.

What are the reviews like?

A gold medal winner on the 2023 Golf Digest Hot List, the AEROJET driver has been received positively overall by critics. It currently has a 5/5 average rating on the Cobra website.

What People Like

  • more speed than the LTDx across the board
  • good dispersions
  • great spin consistency
  • generally longer than the LTDx
  • appealing head shape

What People Don’t Like

  • aesthetic is not eye-catching for some

The Features

Improved Aerodynamics

The aerodynamics of the AEROJET driver are designed to squeeze out as much clubhead speed as possible. Part of this design are symmetrical shaping, a raised skirt, and streamlined edges.

The crown of the driver, made of lightweight carbon fiber, is slightly flatter than traditional designs, and combined with the raised skirt, this is intended to improve airflow over the driver through the swing.

A.I. H.O.T Face

The idea behind H.O.T (“Highly Optimized Topology”) is similar to Callaway’s A.I. Flash Face.

Using machine-learned data from thousands of impact simulations, the thickness of the face is optimized in multiple locations through CNC machining. The result is more consistent spin and increased ball speeds across the face, not just in the sweet spot.

This technology gets its name from the fact that these zones create a topology map consisting of peaks and valleys.

PWRSHELL L-Cup

The L-Cup face, which has historically been used in Cobra irons, now makes its way to the driver.

This variable-thickness insert wraps around the carbon fiber sole and maximizes face flexion at impact, resulting in better launch and more distance.

PWR-BRIDGE

The PWR-BRIDGE consists of a fully suspended weight bar that is positioned near the sole right behind the face.

This shifts the center of gravity (CG) low and forward and improves face flexibility, leading to better energy transfer to the ball at impact and hence more ball speed.

Arccos Sensors

The purchase of Cobra golf equipment like the AEROJET driver immediately makes you eligible to receive free Arccos Smart Sensors and a one-year free trial to the Arccos Caddie app.

Arccos sensors are attached to the clubs in your bag and enable automatic shot tracking, real-time GPS yardage information adjusted for environmental conditions, caddie advice, and post-round strokes gained analytics.

Arccos features can be accessed through a smartphone, smart watch, or Arccos Link device. It is said that Cobra players improve by five strokes on average after their first year using the Arccos Caddie system.

The Performance

Distance

Distance with the AEROJET driver is very comparable to the LTDx in terms of ball speed, clubhead speed and launch.

During my tests, the AEROJET did tend to be slightly longer, however, with a total distance gain of around 5-10 yards on average. This was due to the lower spin rate (by 100-200 RPMs) which ultimately resulted in a shallower descent angle that allowed for some more rollout.

Forgiveness

The AEROJET driver gives you a good amount of forgiveness, not much different from the LTDx. Ball speed retention on mis-hits is great but dispersions can get a little wide if you make a poor swing.

It’s more or less what you would expect given the forward CG position, but if you’re looking for the most forgiveness, the AEROJET MAX is definitely the way to go.

Playability/Trajectory

I found the AEROJET driver to produce a medium launch during my tests. There is no perceptible draw or fade bias either way.

If your swing speed is above average, it’s easy to get the ball up in the air, even when you deviate from the center of the face. However, because spin is a touch on the low side, I suspect that many golfers with below-average swing speeds will have some trouble achieving a high enough trajectory for optimal distance.

You can switch out the back weight on the sole with different AEROJET weights sold separately, and this can alter performance. You can also use the MyFly hosel to add loft, remove loft, or introduce additional draw bias.

Although the LS model is meant to have the most workability in the AEROJET lineup, the workability of the AEROJET is still fairly good. Capable golfers should have little issue hitting fades and draws.

The Look

I appreciate the fact that the overall look of the AEROJET is quite different than the LTDx model, both in terms of the design and colour scheme.

I love the look and texture of the glossy carbon crown, which contrasts with the satin black body. The angled portion of the crown near the hosel gives the driver a unique flare that is very attractive, although I reckon it could be a bit of a visual distraction behind the ball.

The sole aesthetic isn’t my favourite; apart from the carbon fiber textured region, it looks a little too retro and old-fashioned to me. A 12g removable weight is positioned in the rear.

Unlike previous Cobra drivers, the AEROJET driver is only offered in one colour scheme which consists of a dominant black with red, blue and white accents. It’s fine to have a particular theme you want to stick to, but on the other hand, additional options would have been nice.

The face is quite wide and shallow. In contrast to the Infinity Face pattern of the LTDx, the AEROJET opts for a circular sweet spot indicator.

The Sound & Feel

Like the LTDx driver, the AEROJET produces a satisfying “crack” at impact, although I did find it to be a little louder and more reverberating.

Strikes in the sweet spot feel extremely stable through impact. Mis-hit feel isn’t quite as good but still very respectable; I feel confident in saying it’s an improvement over the LTDx. The clarity of feedback is right about where I think it should be considering where the driver is positioned in the AEROJET lineup.

The feel was also very solid and responsive which is impressive for a driver that has this much carbon in it.

Where To Buy This Driver Online

You can buy the AEROJET driver directly from the Cobra store, with the ability to customize length, shaft, grip, loft and more. Financing is available.

Aside from the Cobra store, another great place to order an AEROJET driver from which allows complete customization control (loft, length, shaft, grip, etc.) is this page at PGA TOUR Superstore.

Not only does PGATS accommodate custom requests for most new driver models, but they also offer financing plans, performance guarantees, and club trade-in programs to help you minimize the financial hit and maximize peace of mind.

If you want to save some money, you can find discounts on eBay. Optionally look at what’s available on Global Golf, which is one of the best used golf equipment stores online.

Conclusion

Cobra’s AEROJET driver is generally longer than the LTDx, but how much yardage gain you’ll actually see will largely depend on how much speed you can generate through the ball in order to take advantage of the below-average spin rates.

In addition to being a speed machine, the AEROJET also enjoys great forgiveness and versatility, although there’s not much about it that stands out over previous models. Its visual appeal, particularly on the sole, will be hit-or-miss among golfers.

The AEROJET driver is certainly worth bagging, but if you already own an LTDx and do well with it, I suggest waiting another generation before you upgrade.
